The crescent-shaped Plaza de España is one of the most famous squares in Seville . In honor of the Ibero-American Exhibition of 1929, several buildings were constructed in Maria-Luisa Park.
The square has the shape of a huge semicircle that is completely surrounded by buildings. These buildings formed the Pavilion of Spain during the 1929 World's Fair. The majority of these buildings are used by the government today. At the very bottom of these buildings are 52 tile mosaics, frescoes on which all Spanish provinces are depicted in azulejos (typical Andalusian tiles). There is a fountain in the middle of the square and the central square is almost completely surrounded by a canal over which four bridges have been built representing the 4 ancient kingdoms of Spain (León, Castilla, Aragon and Navarre). You can even sail in the canals with a rented boat.
The bridges over the canal are reminiscent of Venice's iconic waterways , adding a romantic and picturesque charm to the square.
The semi-circular shape of the square represents Spain embracing its former colonies, with a canal symbolizing the ocean connecting Spain to the territories in the Americas.
