The Hermandad de Jesús Despojado is a Catholic brotherhood that performs in Seville every Palm Sunday during Holy Week.
The full name is Humble and Fervent Brotherhood and Brotherhood of Nazarenes of Our Father Jesus Stripped of His Seals and Mary Most Holy of Sorrows and Mercy, Greatest Sorrow of Our Lady, Saint John the Evangelist, Saint Bartholomew the Apostle and Saint Anthony Mary Claret
We can trace its origins to the 1930s , when a group of believers, led by José Laborde Foyo, historical founder of the Confraternity, began to venerate some statues located in the parish of San Marcos . They were a Christ with the iconography of the Sacred Heart attributed to Benito de Hita y Castillo and an anonymous Sorrowful Virgin.
During its first years , the Brotherhood resided in the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows (headquarters of the Brotherhood of Servites), 9 attached to the parish of San Marcos.
The first procession took place on Palm Sunday 1941 from the parish church of Los Terceros, which was part of the monastery complex of the Terceros Franciscans, because the paso could not leave the chapel of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores because he could not fit through the door .
In 1971 the brotherhood moved to the parish of San Bartolomé.
On May 20, 1972, the vicariate returned the rules and it was canonically restored. In 1975, 33 years later, the brotherhood went out in procession again , this time from the parish of San Bartolomé on Holy Saturday, but only with a primitive mystery of Nuestro Padre Jesús Despojado (Our Father Jesus Stripped of His Body). In 1978 it went out on Palm Sunday, just like today. In 1982, the Brotherhood moved to the Chapel of Nuestra Señora del Mayor Dolor in Plaza de Molviedro, where it remains today.
Jesús Despojado: the first paso represents the moment when Jesus is stripped of his clothes before being crucified . The image of the Lord was made by Antonio Perea Sánchez in 1939. The sayones and Roman soldiers are by Manuel Ramos Corona, made between 1997 and 2002. The mystery consists of a Roman centurion, a Roman soldier, a "sayón" representing the Lord undresses, a "sayón" who offers him the chalice of wine and myrrh and another "sayón" who prepares the crucifixion. The mahogany basket with gilded cartouches and decorations is by Antonio Martín Fernández with figures by Barbero and goldwork by Manuel Ríos.
