The monument to the Countess of Barcelona commemorates the exceptionally close bond between Doña María de las Mercedes de Borbón y Orleans, the mother of King Juan Carlos I, and Seville and its traditions. It is located in Paseo de Cristóbal Colón, at the foot of the Real Maestranza de Caballería.
She was a great lover of bulls and all the festivities of Seville.
The monument consists of an equestrian statue of the Countess of Barcelona dressed as a horsewoman. The statue is made of bronze and stands on a round marble base with the following inscription: "Seville to HRH the Illustrious Countess of Barcelona, Lady of the Real Maestranza de Sevilla and holder of the medal of the city". It was inaugurated on May 22, 2008. It is a replica of the statue that stands in the Maestranza itself and in the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid.
