The Chapel of the Pura y Limpia is an 18th-century Catholic church in the old area of the Indian Port, in Almirantazgo Street, next to the Postigo del Aceite , bordering the Reales Atarazanas of Seville.
Of the many street chapels dedicated to the Immaculate Conception built at that time, this is the only one left in Seville, along with those in the patio de Banderas and those on the steps of the cathedral.
The origins of both the church and the devotion to the Pura y Limpia are linked to a painting of the Virgin on an altarpiece that was placed by popular piety in the area where the chapel is located, the old entrance to the city. This painting in turn is associated with the engraving in a judgment printed in Madrid in 1633 by the widow of Juan González and issued by the Royal Council; this judgment put an end to the lawsuit of the "Deputies of the Azeyte Gate of the City of Seville: Whose right the plaintiff defends with the Monastery and the Brothers of San Miguel de los Angeles de Sanlúcar la Mayor, of the Order of Saint Geronimo" , regarding the painting of the Virgin. Gerónimo", regarding the exemption of the purchasers of the monastery's oil from paying half of the alcabala.1 The chapel initially served as a dependency of the oil delegates until, after the expiry of lost its function over time and became an oratorio.
