A24 14 Cáceres - Olivenza

The fourteenth stage is fortunately a short ride after yesterday's long ride. It covers 128 km with 802 Hm, featuring a rolling route in the first half and a flat route in the second half, mainly heading south-southwest.

After leaving Cáceres, we take the N523, a major road with wide shoulders, towards Badajoz. After 5 km we are already at the highest point of the day: Hp 463 m.

After 47 km, we leave that main road for a quieter road through the beautiful Extremadura. In Valdebótea, we take an even smaller road and continue over the río Xévora towards Badajoz. Upon entering Badajoz, we find ourselves on a busy access road and then take the ring road.

On the bridge over the Guadiano, you can admire this beautiful city. We are at the lowest point of the day: Lp 160 m after 101 km. Further along, you can see the old Puente de la Universidad, an ancient Romanesque bridge. The river Guadiano flows from east to west in Spain, but just beyond Badajoz, it flows southward and for quite a distance forms the border with Portugal.

In the wide valley along the Spanish side of the river, we continue towards our stage destination. Towards the end of the ride, there is a nice climb of a few kilometers.

Olivenza is a municipality in the Spanish province of Badajoz in the region of Extremadura with about 12,000 inhabitants.
