In the mountains around Mijas

The mountains around Mijas are a favorite hiking area. There are also many signposted walks. The Pico Mijas is 1150 meters high. This walk goes up to 815m.

Here it was preferred to follow the GR249 , but since these are not loop-shaped, the loop itself was made. The walk follows this GR for two thirds.

The tried and tested recipe : starting in the middle of nowhere to end up about half way somewhere where it is pleasant to stay. In this case: Mijas.

Although only a short 12 km long , 756 altimeters are conquered, the largest part in the first half.

The route starts from a small parking lot about 600m past the Mijas cemetery on the road from Mijas to Alhourin el Grande. This place is known as the Puerto Colorado . It is a frequently used access route by walkers to the many footpaths here.
From here it goes to the GR249.

We ascend for about 2.5 km. Arriving at the Pista Sur , the GR249 goes to the left, we go to the right. We arrive at a kind of plateau where we stay for 2.5 km . Afterwards it goes down quite steeply via an uneven path. Good footwear is recommended! The last part from the Ermita del Calvario we have to go uphill again in the other direction.

Mijas is a very touristy town and it definitely pays to walk up to the rock chapel Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña, as well as the Plaza de Toros and possibly the Cuevas de la Antigua Fragua, the caves of the old forge.

We return for 4 km by following the GR249 from Mijas . Past the Ermita del Calvario and after we reach the stream Arroyo de los Pilones we have to turn left from the GR to get back to the parking lot. When you come to the stream Duenta della Adelfa you know that you are too far...
