Stenay was the place where the King Dagobert II was killed on 23 december in 679. He became Saint Dagobert later on. There is still a cemebration for him on the 23th of December.
One of his servants put a knife in his eye while he took a nap during the hunt in the forest of Woëvre.
Dagobert is buried in the church of Stenay.
