Another asset, perhaps a little less known in the region, but of a completely different character: a landscape that is mainly green, with woods stretching to infinity, ponds, pink rocks, ruined castles, and half-timbered houses. In 1975, this area became the regional natural park of the Northern Vosges, and in 1989, UNESCO designated it as a biosphere reserve. By merging with the German natural park of Pfälzerwald in 1998, it became the first cross-border biosphere reserve in Europe. 83,000 of the 130,000 hectares that make up the reserve - from Saverne to Wissembourg and Vollmunster - are covered by forests. The highest point is located near Niederbronn-les-Bains: the Grand Winterberg (581 m).
