The Col Bagargui is a mountain pass 1,327 meters high in the western Pyrenees. It forms the transition between the former provinces of Soule and Lower Navarra in the French Basque Country. The name "Bagargiak" means "Bright Beeches" and refers to the Iraty forest.
From Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the west, there are two routes to Col Bagargui: The D 18, which is considered the main route, leads north via Mendive and the 1,135 m high Col de Burdincurutcheta, while further south, the D 301 passes through Esterençuby and the passes Col d’Arthaburu and Col de Sourzay. Both routes meet at the small reservoir of Iraty. The shared road D 19 then climbs another 320 meters over a distance of 7 km. At the summit, marked on the sign as Col d’Iraty, is the holiday resort Les Chalets d’Iraty, as well as a restaurant with a viewing terrace. The eastern ramp coming from Larrau is significantly more challenging. It initially follows the narrow valley of a stream for nearly 5 km before abruptly ascending. Over a length of 6 km, it gains almost 600 meters in elevation, with the last 1.5 km being somewhat flatter again. The steepest kilometer has an average gradient of an impressive 11.5%.
