Henri Cernuschi, a wealthy 19th-century financier, returns from his two-year trip to Asia with more than 4,000 works. This was the beginning of one of the largest collections of Asian art in the world. The pieces from China cover all periods, from the Neolithic to the present day. Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese collections were also added. When he died in 1896, Henri Cernuschi bequeathed his mansion in the Parc Monceau and the entire collection it contained to the City of Paris. The luxurious building has been a museum open to the public since 1898.
