The Col de Saales connects the Bruche valley in the northeast with the Fave valley in the southwest. Immediately below the pass summit on the northeast side lies the village of Saales, which gave its name to the pass.
Due to its relatively low height, which almost gives it the character of a watershed, the Col de Saales is a heavily used transport route. The D420 runs over it from Strasbourg through Molsheim and Schirmeck to Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, as does the railway line that follows the same route.
