The market of Vaison-la-Romaine has existed for more than half a millennium. It is one of the oldest and liveliest markets in Provence in the north of the French department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
It was a papal bull of Sixtus IV who, in 1483, authorized Vaison-la-Romaine to hold a weekly market in the medieval city. Then in 1532, Clement VII, at the request of Cardinal François Guillaume de Castelnau de Clermont-Lodève, papal legate, in Avignon, confirmed this privilege and fixed it for Tuesday.
