The Girvière

The Girvière is a hamlet in the commune of Sables-d'Olonne, located in the department of Vendée. The hamlet of Girvière is situated southwest of the former commune of Olonne-sur-Mer, near the Marais d'Olonne and the domanial forest of Olonne which stretches along a dune cordon of the coastline. The river La Vertonne drains the marshes both northwards, to reach the ocean at Brem-sur-Mer, by joining the Auzance, and southward through the channel that connects the port of Sables-d'Olonne to the ocean. Girvière is 1.5 km from the beaches of the wild coast. The crossing of the Vertonne is done via the La Forgerie bridge. Beyond, the domanial forest is crossed by hiking trails with bike paths all along the coast. These territories are classified as ZNIEFF or ZICO. Dunes, forests, and marshes of Olonne, at the gates of Girvière and on part of its territory, constitute one of the 13 Natura 2000 sites of Vendée.
