The Palace of Versailles was built and renovated in phases. Not all renovations are well documented, and even experts do not always agree on the order and dating. The palace was constructed by successive generations over more than three hundred years. What is remarkable about the building is that the successive French kings added to the building rather than extensively renovating it. Louis XIV made a great effort to preserve the facades that had been built by his father. The fact that the style of Louis XIII was no longer in vogue did not matter to him. The garden facade built under Louis XIV is more than 350 meters long and has been preserved unchanged by his descendants. The facades on the city side have been extensively renovated, but Louis XV and Louis XVI did not have the resources to implement their plan, based on designs by Gabriel, in its entirety.
Much of the interior from the reigns of the Louis has been preserved. To these rooms in the styles of Baroque, Rococo, and Classicism, halls and galleries in the styles of the early 19th century were added between 1830 and 1848. The building features quasi-medieval romantic and neo-gothic painting rooms.
