The Lautaret pass is a pass of the French Alps located in the Hautes-Alpes department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, at an altitude of 2,058 m.
It allows to go from the valley of the Guisane to that of Romanche and those who stop there on the way of the departmental road 1091 (ex-national road 91) can observe in particular the link of the Meije to the southwest and that Grand Galibier to the north, as well as several peaks of the Ecrins massif. It is famous for its landscapes, its flora, its alpine botanical garden and for the passage of the Tour de France. It is also close to several protected natural sites, such as the National Park of the Combeynot Peaks and the Ecrins National Park.
It is the highest French pass open to vehicular traffic in winter; however, weather or snow conditions may require a temporary closure.
