Sainte-Marie de Campan is known to cyclists as the start of the climb to the Col du Tourmalet. From here it is 17.2 km to the top. The altitudedifference is 1268 meters. 1913 in Sainte-Marie-de-Campan had a special meaning in the Tour de France thanks to Eugène Christophe, who single-handedly repaired the fork of his bike in a local blacksmith. A plaque in the village reminds this event.
