At the foot of the Grand Ballon, Goldbach dates back to at least 1135, when an Augustinian convent was founded near the hamlet. North of Goldbach is the hamlet of Altenbach, presumed birthplace of Madame Sans-Gêne, wife of Marshal Lefebvre. Away from the main traffic routes, these villages are nonetheless a popular stopping-off point for tourists on their way to the Vosges crests and the Grand Ballon.
The village of Goldbach appeared in 1469 under the name Goltbach, and that of Altenbach in 1335 under its current name. Both villages belonged to the abbey of Murbach until the French Revolution. They merged on January 1, 1973. The Goldbach church is dedicated to Saint-Laurent.
