Montreuil-sur-Mer is not exactly by the sea... The sea is 15 km from here. Until 1537, this city was prosperous, with a port on the Canche River that was directly connected to the sea. But everything silted up, and when Emperor Charles passed by with his army, the beautiful song was definitely over.
Victor Hugo wrote his book 'Les Miserables' here. The city is often used by filmmakers.
