During the French religious war in the 16th century, the town of Marsac-en-Livradois suffered quite a bit. In 1575, the Huguenot captain Merle Marsac seizes the village of Marsac and looted the church. Accompanied by his lieutenant Chavagnac, Merle captured a second time Marsac and burned 120 houses of Protestants.
