History
Grandfontaine appears under the name Grandifontana in a confirmation of the possessions of the abbey of Senones, in 1125. A century and a half later, iron ore was discovered in the mountains, leading to the creation of iron mines and forges, which provided a livelihood for Grandfontaine-Framont. In the 19th century, competition from coal-fired forges threatened Framont, which operated on charcoal, and management errors led to the decline of the industry.
Grandfontaine was part of the Principality of Salm.
At Framont, the buildings of the former forges housed an unexpected collection and an impressive stock of spare parts for the legendary car of the 20th century: the 2CV.

Not to be missed
A Celtic and then Gallo-Roman place of worship, the Donon, at 1010 m altitude, is the junction of four départements. A place of intense passage in all eras, it retains many traces of the many stakes it was the object of. Climbing up to this site is a superb walk, enhanced by pleasant, detailed explanations.
Downstream, the Grandfontaine mines are a must-see. As you wander through the vast galleries, you'll be seduced by the mineral wealth that man has gradually appropriated and transformed. The mine is open to visitors in fine weather, and is a delight to explore under the guidance of a knowledgeable guide.
