Here in Le Touquet, former Prime Minister Paul Vanden Boeynants was imprisoned in 1989. Gangster Philippe Lacroix and the famous Haemers gang were behind it. They will go down in history as the kidnappers of former Prime Minister Paul Vanden Boeynants. Haemers, Lacroix and co. will especially be remembered as the gangsters who kidnapped and imprisoned former Prime Minister Paul Vanden Boeynants in January 1989 in the North French seaside town of Le Touquet. 'VDB' is released alive after a month in exchange for a ransom of 63 million Belgian francs (1.6 million euros). The next day, the politician reports on his kidnapping in his theatrical style: "I said to myself: VDB, you are not going to die here."
