Here, in Auxerre, Royal Judith, the first child of Emperor Charles the Bald, married Baudouin with the iron arm, or Bouwdewijn I. But it was without her father's permission. Bouwdewijn "played chess" with Judith from the city of Senlis. This event became a famous medieval love story. To stay out of the clutches of her furious father, they traveled across Europe for a while, hiding with her uncle Lothair II until October. They fled on a pilgrimage to Rome and, thanks to the intervention of Pope Nicholas I, they officially married there on December 13, 863. Her father eventually made Baudouin the first Count of Flanders. But Judith had specifically chosen him. And that makes her somewhat the primal mother of Flanders.
