The name of the town La Forie comes from the Occitan "faure", meaning "the factory", because of the strong presence of water mills. By the fourteenth century, the valley has attracted papermakers in the valley of Batifole who saw the water power and purity of its water. The creek is ideal for papermaking due to the lack of calcium. The town has no less than 10 mills which are still well preserved today.
