On the border of Southern Champagne and Burgundy, Essoyes is a charming village surrounded by vineyards, fields, and forests.
As you walk through its picturesque streets, you will encounter beautiful stone homes. A few half-timbered houses line the banks of the Ource, a tributary of the Seine with transparent waters, rich in fish, and "with silver reflections," as the painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) famously said.
In fact, Essoyes is also the village from which Aline Charigot originated, model and then wife of the painter. He purchased a house there, which is now open for visits. At the back of the garden, he had his studio installed. For about thirty years, the family spent their summers there. Many are the memories recounted by Jean Renoir. The family enjoyed their time in Essoyes so much that they all chose to be buried there.
