The characteristic spire became world famous when the roof and spire went up in flames in 2019. A few weeks later President Macron and a few historians announced with great pride that Notre-Dame was to be restored to its former state. That spire had to come back. But did you know that that spire did not belong "historically" to Notre Dame at all. The spire was a creation of architect Viollet-le-Duc. The cathedral underwent a 23-year restoration by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc from 1845 to repair the damage caused by the French Revolution. Viollet-le-Duc replaced the partly destroyed statues of the king in the front with self-designed statues. He also placed that famous new crossing tower or flèche on the roof of the cathedral.
