The considerable reputation of the movable heritage of the city of Tours might well represent this city with a rather exceptional historical past. A major pilgrimage in the Early Middle Ages with Martin of Tours, Gregory of Tours, and Alcuin under the Merovingians and Carolingians, with its abbeys Saint-Martin, Saint-Gatien, Marmoutier, and Saint-Julien, which produced in their scriptoriums the Merovingian illumination and Carolingian illumination such as the Lothair Gospel or the Bible of Vivien.
