The Canal du Rhone to Sete is connected with the Rhone by the locks de Beaucaire and Saint-Gilles. After a journey south to Aigues-Mortes, it then follows the coastline to Sète. This channel is the outlet of the entire area between St. Gilles and Aigues-Mortes. It retrieves the waters of rivers such as the Vistre or Vidourle and runoff or drainage. The Canal du Rhone to Sete plays a pivotal role for the Petite Camargue, not only as a center of river transport but also as a vector of inland and marine. It contributes substantially to the operation of complex hydraulic and hydrological system, feeding the wetlands, marshes and ponds of Petite Camargue, irrigating and draining areas drained for agricultural purposes. It is also controls the flood flows of Vistre.
