Causse de Sauveterre is one of the typical limestone plateaus of the Massif Central. Large river gorges cut through the plateaus such as the Tarn. Causse is an Occitan word meaning "limestone plateau". The gorges cut into the plateaus form the most spectacular part. But you should also have a look at the top of the gorges and check out the completely different landscape. You will notice it has a complex pattern of fertile land with deep soil and less fertile pieces of land, with rocky limesonte patches with shallow or no soil. The fertile pieces of land are most of the time linked to (closed) depressions, such as dolina's.
