In the vicinity of the city, the Battle of Rocroi took place on May 19, 1643, a decisive encounter between the Spanish troops led by General Don Francisco de Melo and the French troops led by Louis II de Bourbon-Condé, Duc d'Enghien (Duke of Enghien), in which the Spanish troops, considered invincible, had to suffer defeat.
