Marquette-lez-Lille

The name of Marckete first appears in 1143 in a bull from Pope Celestine II, which assigns the income from the altar to the Saint-Pierre abbey in Lille.

The village, which initially developed on the right bank of the Deûle with the establishment of industrial units (starch factory, chemical industry), expanded to the other bank from the mid-19th century with the creation of a hospital dedicated to Saint-Jean-de-Dieu in the Lommelet neighborhood.

The beginning of the 20th century saw the establishment of two major flour mills, but it was in the 1920s that the municipality industrialized significantly and counted many companies employing local labor: Kuhlmann, Decauville, Les Grandes Malteries Modernes, Massey-Harris, and Les Grands Moulins de Paris.

The closure of these companies in the 1970s left many sites and buildings abandoned. Since then, the municipality has undertaken its conversion, making way for more tertiary activities. Urban developments today allow the municipality to boast a constantly improving living environment while developing numerous modern infrastructures.
