Curé Bérenger Saunière became the priest of Rennes-le-Château in 1885. During a restoration of the church, he is said to have cherished, according to the hypothesis. He is also said to have found three rolls of parchment in a pillar. There was also a pot of gold coins and a Western Gothic chain, along with many other valuable items found inside. Saunière then began to dig both in the church and in the cemetery and subsequently acted like a wealthy gentleman. Among other things, he built a book tower called the Tour Magdala after Mary Magdalene.
