Cardinal Mazarin (one of the focal points during the 17th century civil war in France) and Anne of Austria took refuge here in March 1652 during the rigors of the Fronde, France's civil war. The word fronde means sling, which Parisian mobs used to smash the windows of supporters of Cardinal Mazarin. The Fronde finally resulted in the disempowerment of the territorial aristocracy and the emergence of absolute monarchy.
