The Somme River has its source in the small village of Fonsomme, 15 km from Saint-Quentin. The site is pleasantly laid out for hikers, and offers a pleasant picnic area
Its valley, dug by a 145 km long course, forms a complex of rivers, marshes, ponds and canals. The Somme flows into the Manche, near Saint-Valery-sur-Somme
At the foot of the springs was the Abbey of Fervaques from the Latin "Ferventes aquae", the gushing waters. Following the destruction of the Abbey, the Bernardine sisters settled in Saint-Quentin, on the site of the present Palais de Fervaques, which preserved its name.
