The Somme River originates in the small village of Fonsomme, 15 Km from Saint-Quentin. The site is pleasantly arranged for hikers and offers a nice picnic area. Its valley, carved by a course of 145 Km, forms a complex ensemble of waterways, marshes, ponds, and canals. The Somme flows into the English Channel near Saint-Valéry sur Somme. At the foot of the springs was the Abbey of Fervaques from the Latin "Ferventes aquae," the gushing waters. Following the destruction of the Abbey, Bernardine sisters settled in Saint-Quentin, at the location of the current Palace of Fervaques, which preserved its name.
