In 1915, in the woods of the lower town, near the sorting center, the German army installed a long-range cannon in the greatest secrecy, firing 750 kg shells at a distance of 40 km. The objectives were Compiègne, Villers-Cotterêts and Oulchy-le-Château, three cities supplying the French front. This piece was operational from April 1915. On 14 June, shells exploded in Compiègne in the town, the castle and the park, triggering panic. The French General Staff ordered an aerial reconnaissance. Four days later, Georges Guynemer, one of the most renowned French war pilots, spotted the location. Since 2017, a mobile application around this cannon is available via http://www.chateau-coucy.fr/Actualites/Decouvrez-l-application-COUCY-1917
