This village was rebuilt at the crossroads of the Laon-Fismes road and the Chemin des Dames. Since the 19th century there was a sugar factory on this site that had not been in use since 1914. The German occupation of the sugar factory in September 1914 was the target of several intense and needless attacks by the British troops.
Every year in April-May an impressive ecclesiastical and military ceremony is organized to commemorate the fighting of 1917.
Cerny is traditionally seen as the birthplace of Saint Remi (437-533), the bishop of Reims who baptized Clovis.
