A GOTHIC PALACE CASTLE
king René?s "Château d?Amour", depicted in all its splendor in the illuminations of the "Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry", the Château de Saumur has been a princely palace, citadel, prison and garrison.
In 1906, the City of Saumur purchased the château to house its municipal museum, and undertook restoration work to restore the fairytale architecture of the Dukes of Anjou.
A MUSEUM, A COLLECTION
As a "Musée de France", the museum displays its rich collections throughout the château. Decorative arts adorn the second floor (tapestries, ceramics, furniture), while the "Jeux et joutes à cheval" exhibition on the second floor presents a selection from the horse collection.
AN ARTISTIC PROGRAM
Each year, a new temporary exhibition is presented. Whether it?s contemporary art or an original look at the collections, the visit is always more surprising and is accompanied by an original cultural program.
A UNIQUE PANORAMA
In fine weather, the belvedere overlooking the château's roofs offers a magnificent view of the town and the Loire River.
