The Nans

Les Nans is a French commune located in the Jura department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. The inhabitants of this small agricultural and forest village, situated 10 kilometers north of Champagnole, are nicknamed Les Ours. Les Nans, located 10 kilometers north of Champagnole, constitutes a small Jura commune comprising Nans le Grand, Petit Nans, and Nans sous Garde-Bois. These small settlements occupy the bottom of a fairly narrow valley, the lowest altitude of which is 635 meters, while the surrounding high points exceed 800 meters: it is on the slope of the eastern escarpment that separates Les Nans from Charbonny and Onglières, and where the forest of la Joux begins, that the stream of Angillon springs, a small 26.7 km tributary of the Ain that flows through the center of the depression. The source can be accessed through several caves that speleologists have explored: in particular, there is the Grotte de la Doye, also known as the Grotte aux ours, which has several branches. The western slope, reaching 800 m in places, is occupied by the forest of la Fresse, which separates the valley of Les Nans from the plain of Saint-Germain-en-Montagne and is crossed by the Route des sapins before entering the forest of la Joux and that of Levier to the north.
