Wangen is a French commune in the Bas-Rhin department in the European territorial collectivity of Alsace and in the Grand Est region. It is located at the northern end of the Alsatian Wine Route, with viticulture in Alsace coming to an end only 40 kilometers north at the German border.
First mentioned in 722, Wangen is situated away from the main traffic routes. Until the 17th century, the village was protected by a 15-meter wide and 6-meter deep moat, and access was only possible through the "Niedertor" or the "Motscheltor".
The departmental road D 422 connects the commune with the cantonal capital Wasselonne to the north and Marlenheim, as well as with Molsheim to the south. The bus line 235 also runs in both directions. The railway connection to Molsheim and Saverne was discontinued in 1967, and the route now serves as a bike path.
