In Rouffach, the ancient capital of the Haut Mundat, we enter right into the rich and particular history of Alsace. Where the Rhine plain skirts the slopes of one of the oldest and most renowned vineyards, life has been good here since time immemorial. The Romans, the Merovingians, the knights of the Teutonic Order, the prince-bishops of Strasbourg, the various religious communities and the Renaissance have all shaped and marked the development of Rouffach, whose charms are preserved today by a particularly dynamic heritage development policy.
The Church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, a worthy daughter of Strasbourg Cathedral, remains one of the jewels of Romanesque-Ogival art, dominating a huge square with a charm that is unique in Alsace. The Récollets conventual church was a renowned school during the Humanist era, providing a spiritual springboard for a number of learned theologians and scholars.
The Château d'Isenbourg, built by the Merovingians, was one of the residences of Dagobert II. Today transformed into a 5* Hotel-Restaurant, it overlooks the city from the hillside, giving Rouffach a key element in its heritage identity. Numerous monuments and houses in the Renaissance style, with their distinctive crenellated gables, and the famous witches' tower, complete Rouffach's incomparable romantic character.
With its microclimate, exceptional historical and environmental wealth, gourmet restaurants, renowned grands crus and major events such as the Musicalta festival, the Fête de la Sorcière and Rouffach en Fête, Rouffach is a destination of choice for visitors seeking quality of life and unspoiled splendor in a dynamic yet authentic Alsace.
