Arras

The Grand'Place of Arras is more than 1 hectare large, and it has been the marketplace of the city since the 11th century. Originally, the market was lined with wooden houses that were replaced by stone buildings from the 17th century. The oldest dates back to 1467 and is called Les Trois Luppards.

The belfry stands on the Place des Héros (Heroes Square). This name was given after World War II to commemorate the executed residents. It is commonly referred to as the small market. Here you will mainly find guild houses.

Between 1668 and 1672, Vauban built a citadel in the city. Because of its poorly chosen location, it was called La Belle Inutile (the beautiful useless one).

During World War I, Arras was not far from the front and was therefore heavily damaged during the war. After the war, the town was rebuilt. During World War II, it was occupied by Nazi Germany for over four years starting in June 1940.
