Les Invalides

Source: Bassano

Queen Victoria visited Napeleon's tomb in 1855. She wanted to see the great man who had threatened her country the most. With the Queen on this occasion were Prince Albert, the Princess Royal and the young Prince of Wales. They were accompanied by Napoleon III and his wife. The Queen apparently put her hand on the young prince's shoulder and told him to kneel down before the tomb of the "Great Napoleon." It was eve when she entered Les Invalides, and dark storm clouds slid over the golden dome. While watching the grave, a bolt of lightning flashed through the sky, enlighting the grave and lighting the N at the foot end, followed by a heavy thunderbolt. The organist struck up the national anthem. "Strange and wonderful indeed!" was the Queen's comment!
