Le Mans is a city in northwest France. It is the capital of the Sarthe department. Le Mans has 145,000 inhabitants. The cathedral of Le Mans is one of the main Gothic buildings in France.
The city is known for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the race that has been held since 1923 on the 13.65 km long 'Circuit de la Sarthe' circuit. The name of the circuit comes from the Sarthe river, along which Le Mans is situated. During the race, the aim is to complete as many laps as possible in 24 hours. The race takes place every year on the second weekend of June.
