The Noordmeulen
This stake mill is located on the road to Wormhout and is
made entirely of wood. Oak for the mechanism, the stake,
the mill case and the fixed part in the base and beech
for the toothwork of the wheels and chestnut wood for
the more than 12,000 pans. The mill dating back to 1576
has been producing flour for a long time. In the 1980s
it underwent a full restoration and is now hospitalized
on the list of historical monuments.
It is not known exactly when the Noordmeulen, also known as the mill of the North, was built. We do know, however, that a beam from the year 1576 was discovered during the last restoration of the mill. The mill produced flour and grains until the year 1959. It was bought in 1975 by the city of Steenvoorde in 1975, and restored in 1978 to 1983. When the wind allows, the blades turn when there are visitors.
