The Battle of Stonne, pitting Germans against the French and taking place from May 15, 1940, to May 27, 1940, is one of the most important battles of the Western campaign.
For several days, infantry and armored units from both sides clashed, resulting in heavy losses, over control of the village of Stonne and the ridge line on which it is situated. Overlooking the German bridgehead at Sedan to the north, a French attack from this line could have broken through against it and thus threatened the Germans' advance towards the English Channel.
