Château de Chambéry is an old fortress and a castle of the Dukes of Savoy from the 11th century. It is located in the commune of Chambéry in the Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The castle was built in the 11th century by the Lords of Chambéry. Count Amadeus V made Chambéry the capital of the County of Savoy in 1295, a status it retained until 1563. The castle has been altered several times since the 13th century but has always maintained its administrative function. The chapel of Sainte-Chapelle housed the Holy Shroud from 1502 to 1578. During the fire at Sainte-Chapelle on December 4, 1532, the shroud was damaged and has since borne the visible burn holes. In 1578, Duke Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy transferred the relic from Chambéry to his new residence in Turin at the Turin Cathedral. A large carillon, the "Saint-François de Sales" carillon, consisting of 70 bells, was installed in its bell tower by the Paccard foundry in Sévrier. A concert takes place every first and third Saturday of the month at 5:30 PM.
