The Abbey of Klaarmares is a former abbey located in the place of Klaarmares, which belongs to the French department of Pas-de-Calais.
The abbey was founded on April 26, 1140, by the Count of Flanders, Diederik of Alsace, and his wife, Sybille of Anjou. When this count expressed the desire to establish an abbey in his forest, called Ruholt, near Saint-Omer, Robrecht of Bruges was tasked with this. During the preparations for the Second Crusade, Dierik of Alsace and Bernard of Clairvaux regularly met. The Abbey of Klaarmares was indeed a Cistercian abbey and a daughter abbey of the Abbey of Clairvaux, founded by Bernard of Clairvaux. At its founding, the Abbey of Klaarmares received many gifts from high-ranking noble individuals. It acquired properties in Reninge, Oostvleteren, Lo, Nieuwkapelle, Pollinkhove, and Loon-Plage, among others.
