The Saint-Géraud Abbey of Aurillac is one of the oldest Benedictine abbeys and has influenced the foundation of Cluny. It was founded around 894 in Auvergne (current department of Cantal) by the count Géraud d'Aurillac.
The abbey was a center of intellectual prominence in the Middle Ages, for example formed Gerbert d'Aurillac, while the city is one of the first rescues. She was also head of an important seigniory including the city of Aurillac and a significant part of the south-west of the current department of Cantal. It also had more than a hundred outbuildings and possessions from Auvergne to Spain.
