Champagne

The champagne or the champagne region? The name of the world-famous sparkling wine (le champagne) is almost identical to the name of the region where the festive drink can be produced: la Champagne. The only difference is the gender of the word in French and the use of a capital letter. For the French, this naming is not a trivial matter, as they have obtained through laws and legal procedures that only wine specifically from that region can be called champagne. The cavas, proseccos, sparkling wines, and crémants of this world cannot carry that designation on their labels. Even though they are produced in exactly the same way according to the méthode champenoise, now officially known as méthode traditionnelle. This assertive fight for their appellation of origin has not gone unnoticed, as despite the growing popularity of, for example, Spanish cava, champagne retains the image of being the most noble and refined among the bubbles. No captain would dare to name a new ship after German sekt; only the best champagne can ensure a prosperous voyage. The prices of champagnes, especially from the well-known houses, reflect this, and they continue to rise each year.
