The Musée du Vieux Nîmes is located in the former episcopal palace of Nîmes. It is located in the center of the southern French city of Nîmes, in the Gard department, on the Place aux Herbes.
In 1156 there was a separation between the property of the cathedral and that of the bishop of Nîmes. Pope Adrian IV decided what belonged to the chapter of the cathedral on the one hand and what belonged to the bishop on the other. The latter was given the adjoining land on the west side of the cathedral. One dilapidated building after another succeeded one another as an episcopal residence. In 1567, the palace was heavily sacked during the Michelade, an episode in the French Wars of Religion. In 1636, Bishop Anthime Denis Cothon retired to a private residence because the palace had become uninhabitable. In 1681, the French Crown found the necessary funds for an episcopal palace.
